Not surprisingly scientists at the University of Fluminense in Brazil, and the Institute of Osvaldo Cross have found diabetics are at risk for developing Candida albicans (a type of fungus), infections in the mouth. Candida albicans is the same fungus that causes vaginal yeast infections.

In May and June of 2017, the Journal of Applied Oral Science reported on a study comparing Type 2 diabetic and 15 non-diabetic participants. Among the participants with Type 2 diabetes, 79.2 percent were diagnosed with C. albicans, versus 20.8 percent of participants with normal blood sugar levels. The strain of C. albicans fungus found in most of the diabetic participants was more dangerous than the strains found more often in non-diabetics.
